Daylight saving time is the practice where clocks are moved an hour forward in the spring and again an hour back during winter. This idea was aimed at utilizing more daylight in the summer in order to save energy. Although, this practice has its own benefits, not everybody is convinced about the benefits especially in the modern world. Basically, daylight savings time history is now almost a century and things have gone through tremendous change over that time.
Initially, the idea of daylight saving time was to utilize more daylight in the evening which would result in saving energy bills. However, the argument doesn’t seem to work anymore. As a matter of fact, many people are growing tired of this practice. As a result, it has prompted the end daylight savings time petition.
The DST practice doesn’t seem any better anymore like it was initially. Because of the shortcomings of DST, it seems good to get rid of daylight saving time. Here are some reasons why DST should not continue.
1. It doesn’t save energy costs.
One of the main reason why DST was introduced is to save energy. This is because going an hour forward during spring adds an extra one hour of daylight. The extra hour of daylight allow people to continue working and making good use of their evenings. This meant that artificial light finds less use to save on energy.
Today, however, there is minimal or negligible energy saved as a result of this DST practice. This is because there are computers, air conditioning units and TV screens that use even more energy. Instead, these devices tend to increase energy costs. Because there is not much saving on energy cost, more people are advocating End Daylight Saving Time.
2. DST can make people sick.
Basically, changing time by as little as one hour disrupts the body clock or the circadian rhythm. The tiredness that arises due to DST is often an inconvenience to many people. In some people, such time change could have even more serious consequences. Some studies have also shown that lacking enough sleep at the beginning of DST have resulted in workplace injuries, miscarriages, and car accidents. On the other hand, early evening darkness when the DST period is over have been associated with depression. Also, there is a higher risk of heart attack at the start of DST.
After DST transition, productivity have also been found to decrease which is a disadvantage to the economy. Because of the various shortcomings of daylight saving time, more people don’t find the need to continue with the practice. Because of this, there are petitions to end daylight saving time.
